01. Finishes
Choosing a driveway finish.
The finish affects grip, maintenance and the look of the drive. We'll talk through the options when we see your block.

Exposed aggregate
The top layer is washed back to show the stone in the mix. It has good grip and hides marks, but needs regular resealing.

Plain and stipple finish
Plain concrete costs less than exposed aggregate and usually needs less upkeep. A stipple texture adds grip, which helps on a steep drive.

Coloured concrete
Oxide colours the concrete through the mix, rather than coating the surface. We'll show you samples so you can see how it looks beside the house.

Permeable concrete
Permeable concrete lets water drain through the slab. On some blocks it can help meet planning requirements for site permeability, so ask about it before plans are final.
02. Your quote
What's included in our driveway quote.
We list these five items on the written quote. Ask other concreters for the same details so you can compare the work.
Excavation and base depth
We state how deep we excavate and how deep the compacted crushed rock base will be.
Slab thickness
We state the thickness in millimetres. The right thickness depends on what will use the driveway.
Reinforcement
We name the mesh grade and support it on bar chairs so it sits inside the concrete.
Concrete strength
We state the concrete strength in MPa. You cannot check the mix by looking at the finished slab.
Control joints and falls
We plan the joint spacing and drainage falls before the pour.
03. Replacing an old drive
When an old driveway needs replacing.
Cracks, raised joints and worn wheel tracks can point to problems below the slab. We check the drive and the ground before quoting a replacement.
- Break out and remove the old slab.
- Excavate and compact the new base to the depth in the quote.
- Set the levels so water leaves the house, the garage and the crossover.
- Photograph the base and mesh before the pour.
- Tell you if a repair or resurface would do the job.
If the existing slab is sound, we can talk about resurfacing instead.

How much does a concrete driveway cost?
Price depends on the area, access, demolition, finish and drainage. We need to see the site before quoting.
We'll give you a fixed written quote that lists the build details.
How long before I can drive on it?
You can usually walk on new concrete before you can drive on it. We'll give you the dates for your job and mix before we leave.
Do you have to remove the old driveway?
Usually. Pouring over a cracked or moving slab can carry the problem into the new concrete. If the slab is sound, we can discuss resurfacing.
Will the new drive match my crossover?
Separate pours rarely match exactly. If the crossover is damaged or the levels need correcting, we can quote both together. See crossovers and footpaths.
Can you do the alfresco or path at the same time?
Yes. Doing both together can save on setup costs. We can quote the driveway and outdoor work at the same visit. See alfresco and pool surrounds.
